Supplement your Holidays to Egypt by Tasting Great Teas

Do you want to spend your holiday destinations to Egypt? Aside from going to well known sites such as the Pyramid of Giza and the Sphinx, you should drink some of their teas. Tea is no less than Egypt’s national drink and is often served during breakfast. In Egypt, tea is a part of folk etiquette and daily life. In fact, if you go inside an Egyptian household, the family will let you know you are welcome by serving you a cup of tea. Try out some of these tea varieties.

1. Koshary tea
This is a well-known light drink in Northern Egypt. It is prepared by steeping black tea in boiling water. The tea is then set aside for a few minutes. Then it is sweetened with cane sugar and flavored with fresh mint leaves. You can also pour some milk to give the drink a fuller body.

2. Saiidi tea
Saiidi tea is common in Southern Egypt. Two tablespoons of black tea per cup is boiled with water over a strong flame for more than five minutes. The result is a massively heavy and bitter tea. You can can lighten it up with some milk.

3. Green tea
Light and refreshing, green tea is a recent arrival in Egypt. Green tea is formulated from ground, snipped, or whole leaves of the camellia sinensis. The tea is rich in flavonoids, antibodies, and polyphenols that enhances your health.

4. Karkadeh
Made out of dried hibiscus petals, karkadeh is not a true tea but an herbal tea. It is usually served very sweet and cold. But it can also be served piping hot. It is said that the Karkadeh was once the drink of pharaohs of the old. As a tradition, wedding celebrations are blessed with a toast of hibiscus tea.

5. Licorice tea
Served during Ramadan, licorice tea is a sweet drink made of dried apricot and water. It is quite refreshing during hot weather.
